This view of the Forward End of the Eastwick gives an idea of the cramped accommodation available for the crew. Note too the lifeboat situated in easy reach of the two hidden cabins. The Galley and Messroom would have also been small, and the lighting poor. Which makes it more amazing that Jack Hall could produce such beautifully crafted instruments from matchsticks. Imagine him coming off watch on a cold and windy night, discarding his heavy oilskins and then devoting his limited leisure hours to a hobby requiring extreme patience, nimble fingers and real artistic ability. What price now the so-called artistic offerings from past winners of the Turner Prize.

Could he have been eyeing up the prospects of making a matchstick mast?

While the Box Brownie was a popular camera, colour photography was still a long way off for the casual photographer. It was common practice to add colour to your photographs with a special wash-colour paint. It looks like someone added their own background colouring to this one.
