'Vindi Boy' Chas Mason recalls:

Hello Tony,I hope you don't mind me dropping you a line. My name is Chas and I live in London UK I was on the "Vindi" from 20/8/51 to 26/10/51 (deck) Discharge Book No. R564797

I am also a member of TSVA (UK). While looking on that site I saw Gordon Tumber's site and read the article "The Matchstick Man" about your Father, Jack Hall. What a wonderful man he must have been. I saw that he was on the HMPS Triton. As you said "It was on this grand old ex-Victorian naval paddle steamer he got his basic lessons in seamanship".

The "Triton" was tied up in London's West India Dock (opposite) the shipping office (The Pool) for years and it was where I (in1953) and many others did their Lifeboat, E.D.H and A.B.Certificates, and at that time it flew the "Red Duster" at it's stern. When the Docks were taken over and turned into what is now called "Dockland", the old Triton disappeared along with everything else. But I found an old photo I thought you might like of the "Triton", I don't know what year it would have been taken, but as you can see it's under the White Ensign.

Best Regards.

Chas.

Hello again Tony

I thought I would let you know that after digging around I finally found out ( according to Colleges "Ships of the Royal Navy") that the HMPS Triton was broken up in October 1961 at Bruges. It's a shame. I was hoping that she was still about somewhere and could have been restored. Keep well.

Regards

Chas.
